Biblical Counselling

Biblical Counselling

The elders at Lynnwood Baptist Church are equipped to provide practical help for all difficult life issues through Biblical counselling. Many in the world have come to believe that Biblical or Christian counselling has a broad spectrum of meaning and practices based on one’s own interpretation of the Bible and the role it plays in meeting the needs of people. However, LBC, believes true Christian counselling affirms that Scripture has only one meaning and is the sufficient and authoritative Word of God. Through Scripture, we have everything we need to live in a way that pleases God, including understanding and resolving the non-physical personal and inter-personal difficulties we face (2 Tim. 3:16).
The counselling at LBC is comprehensive in its approach to understanding people and their problems. While many follow the reductionist approach which reduces the person’s problems to one cause, such as the person’s circumstances, experiences, unmet needs, physical problems or their emotions, LBC takes a holistic approach to counselling which recognises the importance of the whole man in producing change, both in outward circumstances and the core aspect of the person. Scripture calls this core aspect the heart (Prov. 4:23). The heart is the control centre of a person’s life and consists of responses, observations, interpretations, conclusions, values, desires, beliefs, thoughts and emotions. This comprehensive approach is essential for understanding and helping every aspect of a person’s past, present and future difficulties.

What are the distinguishing features of true Christian Counselling?

Christian counselling is conscientiously and comprehensively Christ-centred. He is the centre and the circumference of counselling, and everything in between. Examining the nature and causes of our human difficulties involves understanding the ways we are unlike Christ in our values, aspirations, desires, thoughts, feelings, attitudes, actions and responses. Moreover, it teaches how to acquire, through Christ, the power to replace these behaviours with Christ-like qualities.

Christian counsellors have experienced the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. They have come to Christ in repentance and faith, and acknowledge Him as Lord and Saviour. They believe Christ is all we need for effective and productive living. Their theological convictions influence, permeate and control every aspect of their lives.

The local church is God’s instrument for calling the lost to Himself, and the context in which He brings people to sanctification. He uses the church to motivate individuals to take off the old manner of life and put on the new. Thus, Christian counselling works with the church to help people live the new life in Christ.

Christian counselling uses Scripture as the source for understanding the nature of humankind and finding ways to resolve its problems. It is totally grounded in this belief then, that God’s Word is all-sufficient for comprehending and resolving the real issues of life.
